Thirteen young actors are discovering the fun of theatre — onstage and behind the scenes.
There hasn't been a teen theatre production at Theatre Tillsonburg in about ten years.
That's changing this week, as thirteen young people take the stage for Will You Be My Nemesis, a comedy about superheroes and supervillains who are trying to find their nemeses. The production is being directed by Pete Matthews and his daughter, Tabatha Buckle, and Pete says most of the young actors had little or no theatre experience coming into the production:
And, while the show itself is supposed to be funny, Pete says one of the best parts has been watching the young cast become more confident with every rehearsal:
That confidence has come with a pretty strong sense of teamwork, too — especially during the summer, when vacations occasionally leave the production short a cast member:
Theodore McCarter, who plays "Doctor Nightmare," the lead villain in Will You Be My Nemesis, had never acted in a production before this one, but he has discovered that putting on a play involves a whole lot more than learning lines:
There are only three performances, and tickets are already on sale through Theatre Tillsonburg. Considering thirteen young actors are likely to have a pretty substantial cheering section in the audience, Pete says you probably shouldn't wait too long to get yours.
Ezrah Schultz plays one of the superheroes, and she's been acting since Grade 7. So when she's asked about putting all these weeks of rehearsal into just three performances, her reaction is surprisingly upbeat:
Will You Be My Nemesis opens August 28th, with a 7:30 evening performance, followed by matinees August 29th and 30th.
