As we cap off National Pet Month, Tillsonburg's New County 107.3 and 101.3 Giant FM is shining a spotlight on the people, organizations, and businesses helping care for the furry friends that make our community special with our week-long ‘Animal House’ Feature.
Rags to Riches Cat Rescue is one of many organizations in Norfolk County that goes the extra mile to support kittens and cats in need.
Tammy DaPalma, founder and owner of the organization, has always been passionate about animals but especially cats. At one point, she dreamed of owning a pet store, but she decided there were many other ways she could work with animals.
"That didn't quite materialize, as there was a lot of cleaning involved," she joked.
DaPalma got involved in cats and rescues after her father passed away. She felt it was a calling of sorts and wanted to make a difference in her community. She began as a volunteer in the Greater Toronto Area that would always bring cats and kittens to her local area pet stores, plus helping with set up and participating in numerous adoption events.
She and her family moved to the area in 2021, and the rest is history.
"I noticed a lot of cats out in the country, approaching my property, that had previous owners. I started learning about the country dumps. Essentially, I couldn't turn a blind eye to it and I started a non-profit, which then became a charity, and along came the volunteers and what we are today."
They currently have about 250 cats in need of adoption or fostering, which you can find on their website.
On the subject of fostering, there are some misconceptions out there about what that process entails for anyone that might be interested.
"A foster home is where someone can nurture and take care of the animals. We cover all of the vet-related costs, food, litter, and anything you need. All we ask is that you provide the love and attention for the animal," she added.
Donations and volunteers are always needed, and every little bit helps them on their mission.
