Fuel Up: Gas prices in Tillsonburg

March 4 is National Grammar Day, a celebration created in 2008 by Martha Brockenbrough of the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar. The day comes with a perfect built‑in motto: “March forth on March 4 to speak well, write well, and help others do the same!” It’s a lighthearted reminder that the way we use language shapes how clearly we communicate — and sometimes how hilariously things can go wrong.

Grammar isn’t about being stuffy or nitpicky. It’s about clarity. It’s the difference between inviting your mom to dinner — “Let’s eat, Mom!” — and something far more sinister — “Let’s eat Mom!” Commas save lives, and so does good sentence structure.

There’s also something deeply satisfying about catching a typo or fixing a misused there/their/they’re. Proofreading scratches a very specific itch, whether you’re reviewing your own writing or quietly correcting a menu at a restaurant. And for many of us, grammar comes with a wave of nostalgia — memories of Schoolhouse Rock, classroom posters, and the first time a teacher explained why “its” and “it’s” are not interchangeable.

National Grammar Day is a chance to slow down, reread that email before you send it, and maybe thank the editors, teachers, and word‑nerds who keep our sentences from falling apart.
