Fuel Up: Gas prices in Tillsonburg

March 5 is National Barbie Day, a celebration of the 11‑inch icon who debuted in 1959 and went on to shape more than six decades of imagination, fashion, and childhood storytelling. Designed by Ruth Handler and introduced at the American International Toy Fair in New York, Barbie was created to show girls they could be anything — and she’s spent her entire existence proving exactly that.

Barbie’s origins trace back to a German doll named Lilli, which inspired Handler to create a more wholesome, aspirational version for North American children. Before Barbie, most dolls were babies or toddlers. Handler wanted something different — a grown woman with a career, a personality, and a future kids could project themselves into. She named the doll after her daughter, Barbara, and the rest is toy‑industry history.

Over the years, Barbie has taken on more than 200 careers — from nurse to astronaut to robotics engineer — and has evolved to reflect changing cultural expectations. Mattel expanded the Barbie universe with friends like Midge, Christie, Teresa, and of course Ken, who arrived in 1961 after fans demanded a companion for the already‑famous doll.

Before you head off to celebrate with a little nostalgia — or maybe a chorus of “I’m a Barbie Girl” — here’s your Tillsonburg fuel update:
