March 11 is National Dream Day, a celebration created to encourage people of all ages to believe in their dreams and pursue them with purpose. The day was inspired by “The Millennium Man,” Robert Muller, and is observed each year on his birthday. The Dream School Foundation — an organization dedicated to helping children realize their potential — launched the holiday to remind young people especially that their dreams are valid, achievable, and worth chasing.
For many, dreams are treated like fairytales: fun to imagine, but not meant to be lived. National Dream Day pushes back against that idea. It’s a day to reflect on what you want for your life, to take steps toward long‑held goals, and to remember that ambition doesn’t come with an age limit.
Robert Muller, the inspiration behind the holiday, spent his life proving that dreams can shape the world. Born in Belgium in 1923, Muller grew up on the border of Germany and France during the turmoil of World War II. His early experiences — including displacement, imprisonment, escape, and joining the French Resistance — shaped his belief in peace, cooperation, and global unity.
At 25, he joined the United Nations as an intern and went on to devote four decades to the organization. His work earned him international recognition, numerous awards, and the nickname “The Millennium Man” for his forward‑thinking ideas about peace and global governance. After retiring to Costa Rica in 1986, he helped establish the U.N.’s University for Peace and created projects like the Bench of Dreams and the Dream Bench Diary — all rooted in the belief that dreaming is an act of hope.
National Dream Day honours that legacy by encouraging everyone to dream boldly and act with intention.
