Community Options for Justice seeks new board members

A young person who commits a crime can still change direction. And in Oxford County, there’s an organization working to help make that possible - while looking for new community members to help shape its future.

Community Options for Justice serves all of Oxford County, providing programs mainly focused on youth justice. Executive Director Courtney Strickler says the work is individualized, because young people come with different circumstances, needs and challenges.

The organization works with young people who have been in conflict with the law, including those on probation. Support can include counselling, help with school, health and wellness, anger management and other skills intended to help them learn from their experiences. The Youth Programs receive funding through Ontario’s Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services.

Strickler says the approach starts with listening, rather than judging.

That support is tailored to the individual. Staff look for ways to engage young people through their interests while helping them develop the skills they need to move forward. The organization also offers restorative justice, which can bring people affected by an offence together for a voluntary conversation guided by a mediator. The goal is to give those involved an opportunity to talk about what happened and the harm caused.

There’s also a skill-development program for young people aged 12 to 17 whose parents, schools or other community agencies are concerned about behaviours that could lead to trouble. Availability depends on the organization’s capacity.

Now, Community Options for Justice needs more people to help guide its own future. With board members stepping down, the organization is looking for new directors who can bring fresh perspectives as it works to grow and expand its services.

Previous experience serving on a nonprofit board would be an asset, particularly for people familiar with board governance. The organization is looking for the right fit, with meetings held in Woodstock and a mix of in-person and virtual participation.

For Strickler, the need for this work comes down to the belief that young people can learn from what they’ve done and make different choices in the future.

For an organization working to give young people a way forward, new community voices could help make more of that work possible.
