Free event helps make the transition to school a little smoother, giving parents and caregivers greater peace of mind.
For many children, the first day of school brings a mix of excitement and nerves. Along with meeting new classmates and teachers, many young students will also be climbing aboard a school bus for the very first time. To help make that experience a little less intimidating, Southwestern Ontario Student Transportation Services is inviting families to take part in its free First Time Rider Day on Thursday, August 20.
The program is open to first-time bus riders attending schools within the Thames Valley District School Board and the London District Catholic School Board. For example, Woodstock families can choose one of four 30-minute sessions beginning at 5:00, 5:30, 6:00 or 6:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Secondary School in Woodstock.
Each session begins with a bus safety presentation before children and a parent or guardian climb aboard for a short practice ride. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to safely board the bus, where to sit, what to expect during the ride, and how to exit safely before the first day of classes. Wheelchair-accessible buses will also be available for families who require them.
Organizers say the goal is to help children become familiar with the experience ahead of time, making the transition to school a little smoother and giving parents greater peace of mind.
The event is free, but advance registration is required. Parents are asked to reserve one ticket per student, which includes one accompanying adult for the practice ride.
Registration closes on Thursday, August 13.
While the Woodstock sessions will serve Oxford County families, identical First Time Rider events are also being held the same evening in London, St. Thomas and Strathroy, making it easier for families across the region to take part.
