He not only ran the Boston Marathon, but then pedaled across Canada.
This past year a grieving father from Port Dover inspired thousands when he not only ran the Boston Marathon, but then pedaled across Canada in memory of his son Luke.
When his son Luke passed away, Dan Johnson felt the weight of a father’s heartbreak. But rather than letting the pain define him, he channeled it into something extraordinary—a journey to honor Luke’s life, uplift his community, and give back in a way that would leave a lasting legacy.
The Boston Marathon
Running the Boston Marathon had been a lifelong dream for Dan.
In 2025, that dream took on a new meaning.
He trained for years, and last year he felt determined to honour his son by finally running it.
Then, at kilometer 17, disaster struck: a stray water bottle led to a busted ankle and forced him to stop running.
Yet even in the setback, a spark of something greater was born.
In many ways, Johnson saw this moment as the start of something even bigger - the Live Like Luke Canada Crossing.
Live Like Luke: A Cross-Canada Mission
Dan’s project, Live Like Luke Canada Crossing, wasn’t about flashiness.
It was about dedication, persistence, love, and a desire to see a hospice open it's doors right in Haldimand-Norfolk.
Each day on the road meant rising early, pedaling thousands of kilometers, and facing the grind of long hours under the sun, wind, and rain.
From British Columbia’s mountain passes to the plains of Alberta, Dan faced challenges, close calls, and the constant hum of the open road.
In the early days, Dan admits there were concerns about his safety and, seeing the donations coming in slowly, if it was even worth continuing.
What made the project truly remarkable was the way Norfolk County and beyond rallied together.
Over 80 sponsors joined and countless individuals and community groups.
Every donation, every cheer from spectators, and every mile pedaled was more than a tribute for Luke—it was a reminder that grief can be transformed into something powerful and lasting.
2026 and Beyond!
When asked about what’s next, Dan had this to say.
With that, he admits there is still that itch.
Donations are still being accepted to the Norfolk-Haldimand Community Hospice.
