What's Good in Tillsonburg? Battle of the Badges returns with community, competition and a cause

Constable Randi Crawford says the idea grew from the long-standing playful rivalry between police and firefighters.

A friendly rivalry with a meaningful purpose is set to return later this month as the Oxford OPP hosts its third annual Battle of the Badges charity hockey game.

The event takes place Saturday, April 25 at the Tillsonburg Memorial Arena, bringing together Oxford OPP officers and Tillsonburg Fire and Rescue Services for a game that blends competition with community spirit.

Constable Randi Crawford says the idea grew from the long-standing playful rivalry between police and firefighters.

“It was a way to bring the community, our peers, and fellow first responders together and just cheer each other on and have that family rivalry—all for a good cause,” said Crawford.

The afternoon begins with a free public skate from 2 to 3 p.m., followed by the main game at 3 p.m.

Battle of the Badges always supports a meaningful, local cause. Spectators are asked to make a $5 donation, with this year’s proceeds going to St. Joseph’s Health Care London’s rehabilitation program at Parkwood Institute.

She adds that “almost everybody in our community knows someone who has needed rehab treatments, and many of those people receive care at Parkwood.”

The annual game is tied 1-1 between OPP and fire services, making this year’s matchup a deciding game.

Beyond the scoreboard, Crawford says the event plays an important role in building community.

“It’s nice to take time to do things like this, to see the smiles on people’s faces and just come together—we’re all human and we all need that sense of togetherness,” she said.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance. Crawford say the goal is simple: bring people together, raise funds, and have some fun along the way.
