Theatre Tillsonburg is inviting audiences to step back into the 1950s with its upcoming production of Hilda’s Yard, a warm and witty comedy written by Norm Foster.
The show is being co-directed by father-and-daughter team Pete Matthews and Tabitha Buckle. While Matthews has directed many productions in the past, this marks Buckle’s first time taking on the role of director. Matthews encouraged his daughter to step behind the scenes.
To ease the nerves of a first-time director, the two decided to co-direct, turning the production into a family collaboration. Both directors say the partnership has worked smoothly, with very few creative disagreements.
Buckle said she was drawn to the script because the family in the play reminded her of her own.
Hilda’s Yard takes place entirely in a backyard over the course of one evening, offering a static, but visually interesting setting for the stage. Buckle tells us the play follows Sam and Hilda.
What follows is a mix of family chaos, heartfelt moments, and plenty of laughs. The play balances comedy with touches of seriousness, exploring themes of family, change, and the challenges that come with growing up and growing older.
Opening night is February 19 and the directors invite audience members to dress the part.
The production runs for two weekends, offering evening performances and several matinees to accommodate audiences of all ages.
