The annual barbecue brings the community together while raising thousands for Shriners health care
The Tillsonburg Shrine Club is adding some new firepower to a tradition that has been cooking for more than six decades.
The club’s 66th annual barbecue returns September 9th, and will feature a brand-new 1,000-pound tank smoker.
Barbecue chairman Cedric Tomiko says the large smoker is similar to equipment used at major barbecue and rib events.
Organizers are planning to cook about 65 pork shoulders, enough to help feed between 500 and 700 people.
The menu also includes locally grown corn and the club’s homemade barbecue sauce.
While the new smoker will be getting plenty of attention, the barbecue also supports an important cause. Money raised by the club helps support Shriners health care, including a clinic at London Health Sciences Centre.
The Tillsonburg Shrine Club has donated roughly $60,000 to $65,000 in each of the past two years toward the London clinic.
Tomiko also thanked local sponsors, including Bre’s Fresh Market, Zehr’s Tillsonburg, E&E McLaughlin and Chrissy’s Catering, for helping keep costs down. The 66th annual barbecue takes place September 9 at Kinsmen Memorial Arena, with doors opening at 5 p.m.
