What's Good in Tillsonburg? Oxford Terry Fox Run carries on 45-year Woodstock tradition

This year’s Oxford Terry Fox Run takes place Sunday, September 20, at Southside Park in Woodstock.

The Terry Fox Run is returning to Woodstock this weekend, continuing a community tradition that dates back to the very first year of Terry Fox Runs in Canada.

Woodstock held its first run on September 13, 1981, and organizer Steve Iorio said the community was recently recognized by the Terry Fox Foundation for its long-running support.

For Iorio, the cause is deeply personal. He lost his right leg to bone cancer as a teenager and got to meet Terry Fox in Niagara Falls.

Iorio said the meeting came during one of the most difficult periods of his life. He had lost his leg just months earlier and was undergoing chemotherapy when Fox began his Marathon of Hope. Their shared experiences gave Iorio a connection with Fox that would stay with him for decades.

Iorio has supported Terry Fox Runs since 1981 and became involved locally after moving to Woodstock in 1989. He said raising money for cancer research remains a passion after seeing firsthand what patients and their families experience.

This year’s Oxford Terry Fox Run takes place Sunday, September 20, at Southside Park in Woodstock. Registration opens at 9 a.m., and the event is designed for all ages and abilities.

Participants can walk, run, cycle, wheel or stroll, with 2.5-kilometre, five-kilometre and 10-kilometre routes available. People are also welcome to simply come out and support those taking part.

Participants can register online ahead of time or sign up at the registration table on run day, with volunteers on hand to help.
