The Tillsonburg Station Arts Centre (TSAC) has unveiled a new piece of public art, a hand-painted bench mural created by local artist Tabitha Verbuyst. Known for her oil landscapes and detailed watercolour portraits, Verbuyst embraced acrylics for this project, transforming a historic station bench into a vibrant tribute to veterans.

Verbuyst, who also serves as part of the TSAC team explains this is one of three benches with histortic roots at the Arts Centre.

The mural bench rests against the red station wall, facing the Veterans Walkway on Bridge Street, and depicts bright red poppies.

Verbuyst explained that the she was inspired by a desire to honour veterans in a visible, lasting way.

The TSAC partners with the Military History Club each year, using its gallery spaces to showcase Remembrance Week, and felt this project was a perfect addition. Verbuyst reflected on the importance of public art, such as murals, and how it serves the community.

The TSAC, a nonprofit cultural hub, has long been a cornerstone of Oxford County’s creative community. Upcoming events include a Thanksgiving art supply sale (Oct 11) and the annual Holiday Arts Market in December, which will feature more than 20 local vendors offering handmade gifts.

Visitors are invited to view the poppy bench in person and experience its heartfelt details—a reminder of how art can both beautify public spaces and honour those who served.
