New Reading Rockets and returning Reading Buddies programs aim to help young readers build skills, confidence and a love of reading.
As students head back to class, the Tillsonburg Branch Library is putting extra focus on helping children build their reading skills.
Literacy Program Specialist Katelyn Bennett says several programs are planned for the fall, including a new one called Reading Rockets.
The program is designed for children in Grades 1 and 2 who may be struggling with reading or are reluctant to pick up a book.
The first round is for Grade 1 students, with registration opening September 8. Sessions are scheduled for September 28, October 13 and October 26 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. A Grade 2 version will follow in November and December.
Bennett says the goal goes beyond improving reading skills. The library also wants children to see reading and learning as something they can enjoy.
The library is also bringing back its Reading Buddies program for children ages six to 12. Volunteers have already been lined up, but the library is currently looking for children to take part.
Reading Buddies pairs struggling or reluctant readers with a volunteer for one-on-one support.
Bennett says families should also remember that children’s programs at the library are free and there are additional resources available with a library card.
There is more than literacy on the fall schedule. The library’s monthly gaming club returns September 14, while Family Movie Friday is set for September 11. An Anime Art Night for teens will also take place September 24 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
