The Children’s Aid Society of Oxford County is recognizing the people who step up to provide children and youth with a familiar place to call home during difficult times.
CAS Oxford is marking Kinship and Alternate Care Awareness Week, running September 14 to 18.
Kinship care is used when a child or youth cannot remain at home and is able to stay with someone they already know, such as a grandparent, aunt, uncle, neighbour or family friend.
CEO Tina Diamond said that familiarity can make a major difference.
Diamond said that can reduce disruption during an already challenging period.
CAS Oxford is currently supporting about 43 kinship families caring for approximately 55 children and youth.
During awareness week, CAS Oxford is personally thanking those caregivers through messages and calls from workers. Kinship families will also be included in a larger caregiver appreciation event in October.
Diamond said the everyday support these families provide can have a lasting impact, whether it is creating routines, sharing meals, attending appointments or simply being there.
CAS Oxford is also encouraging people interested in helping to consider volunteering or becoming a foster parent. Volunteers can support families in several ways, including providing transportation to visits or medical appointments.
