Garage fire near Courtland causes $50,000 damage, family cat rescued

At approximately 9 p.m. Thursday, the Norfolk County Fire Department responded to a residential garage fire on Highway 3, just outside Courtland, with assistance from Norfolk OPP and Norfolk County Paramedic Services.

Three fire stations were dispatched after the homeowner heard a loud noise and discovered a fire in the attached garage. The resident safely evacuated the home and called 911.

Firefighters arrived to find a working garage fire and quickly brought it under control, preventing it from spreading into the living area. Although the home sustained smoke damage throughout, crews were able to limit the overall damage.

Firefighters also rescued the family's cat from inside the home. The animal was unharmed.

No injuries were reported.

Damage is estimated at approximately $50,000, and the home is insured. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Norfolk County Fire Department is reminding residents to have working smoke alarms on every level of their home and outside all sleeping areas. Officials also encourage homeowners to test smoke alarms monthly, replace batteries when needed, and replace alarms at the end of their service life.
