Unvaccinated students can face suspension
As we inch closer to the start of the new school year, it's time to make sure your child's vaccines are up to date.
By law, as a parent or guardian you are required to immunize your school aged child against certain diseases for them to attend school.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Alex Summers tells us their role in all of this.
Dr. Summers says if kids aren't vaccinated, they can be suspended as a last resort.
Parents and caregivers are always given ample time to rectify the situation.
According to the Ontario government website, between 4 and 6 years old, children should receive the following vaccines:
tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, polio
measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox
In grade 7, children should receive the following vaccines:
meningococcal conjugate (Men-C-ACYW)
hepatitis B
human papillomavirus (HPV)
And Between 14 and 16 years old, teens should receive the following vaccine:
tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis
