The community fundraiser, now in its fifth year, has become one of the organization's largest events, drawing more than 230 participants last year.
Norfolk Haldimand Community Hospice is preparing for another strong turnout as its annual Hike for Hospice returns to Silver Lake Park this Sunday (June 7) in Port Dover.
The community fundraiser, now in its fifth year, has become one of the organization's largest events, drawing more than 230 participants last year. This year, organizers hope to welcome more than 250 walkers while raising $90,000 to support hospice services across Norfolk and Haldimand counties.
Executive Director Andrea Binkle said the event is designed to be accessible for everyone.
Participants gather at Silver Lake Park around 10 a.m., with the walk beginning at 11 a.m. The route takes about an hour to complete, followed by food, children's activities, and opportunities to meet hospice staff and volunteers.
Binkle said the fundraiser supports the hospice's current services, including psychosocial support, spiritual care, grief counselling, bereavement programs.
While the organization continues planning for a future 10-bed residential hospice centre, Binkle said the immediate focus remains on expanding services available today.
The hike also serves as an important awareness campaign, helping residents learn about hospice supports available to individuals and families facing life-limiting illnesses.
Last year's event raised approximately $80,000, exceeding expectations. Binkle is encouraging residents to come out and take part this year as the organization aims to surpass that total and reach its $90,000 fundraising goal.
Residents can register online through Norfolk Haldimand Hospice's website, sponsor a participant, or sign up on the day of the event. Organizers say everyone is welcome, whether they are walking in memory of a loved one, supporting hospice care, or simply looking to enjoy a family-friendly day outdoors.
