Kinsmen lead community push to restore splash pad for families in Simcoe

What began as plans for a simple upgrade quickly turned into a larger project.

The Kinsmen Club of Simcoe is calling on the community to come together to help renew a well-loved splash pad and keep it ready for families this summer.

What began as plans for a simple upgrade quickly turned into a larger project after it was discovered the 20-year-old concrete base is breaking down and needs full replacement.

Past president Mike Ryder said the splash pad has reached the end of its lifespan.

The project is currently estimated at $80,000, though that cost could increase before the tender is issued. While Norfolk County owns the site, project leader Dennis Travale says the Kinsmen have stepped up to lead the fundraising effort.

The initial response has been encouraging, with about three-quarters of the funds already raised through donations and community support. However, Ryder says the project is behind expectations.

The splash pad is a key spot in the community, giving people of all abilities a place to cool off.

Jill Anema, a board member with South Coast Special Needs Kids Inc., says a fully accessible splash pad is important for families like hers. She notes her son Duncan, who uses a wheelchair or walker, regularly enjoys the current space.

With a potentially hot summer ahead and the Annaleise Carr Aquatic Centre closing for renovations, Travale says it’s even more important to support the project.

Donations can be made through the Norfolk Community Foundation, and Travale adds—don’t toss those empty wine and beer bottles or cans, they can help support the project too.

Alcohol containers and pop cans can be dropped off at Kin Club trailers in Simcoe and Waterford, including the Simcoe Legion, Waterford ESSO, Haviland Automotive, and Hillcrest Road. Organizers say with continued community support, they’re hopeful the project will be completed in time for summer, keeping the splash pad open for all to enjoy.
