Norwich Jedi Alliance vows to keep fighting for inclusion after Pride flag thefts

The Jedi Alliance says it will continue supporting the local 2SLGBTQI+ community despite several recent Pride flag thefts being investigated by Ontario Provincial Police. The group plans to keep promoting inclusion through community events, Pride marches, and by replacing stolen flags for residents.

The Jedi Alliance of Norwich say they will continue promoting inclusion and supporting the local 2SLGBTQI+ community following another series of Pride flag thefts under investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police.

The Jedi Alliance, whose name stands for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity, was formed in response to growing anti-Pride sentiment in the community several years ago. Since then, members have taken part in local events and advocacy efforts to show support for 2SLGBTQI+ residents.

Founding member Jennifer Wild said the group was created to ensure people know they are not alone.

Oxford OPP are investigating several Pride flag thefts reported between June 12th and June 15th from a school property and private homes on Jerdon Street and Stover Street. Police continue to review evidence and are asking residents to check surveillance cameras for anything that may assist investigators.

Wild said seeing flags repeatedly stolen has been disappointing but has strengthened the group's determination.

The organization recently held a Pride march through Norwich after another incident involving vandalism and was meant to encourage positive conversations.

The Jedi Alliance also plans to attend community events throughout the summer, including Nostalgia Days, while distributing donated Pride flags to residents who have had theirs stolen.

Wild said the group's long-term goal is simple.

Investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding these incidents and are working to identify those responsible. Police are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
