OPP remind Oxford County ORV operators to ride safely and legally

Oxford OPP are reminding off-road vehicle operators to ride safely and follow provincial and municipal rules as complaints continue to be reported across Oxford County.

Police say concerns include excessive speed, stunt driving, impaired operation, lack of protective equipment and riding in unauthorized areas.

ORVs operated in Ontario must be registered, display a licence plate and be insured. Operators must also carry proof of registration and insurance.

The OPP are reminding riders to:

Wear an approved, properly fastened motorcycle helmet.
Never operate an ORV while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
Adjust speed to trail, weather and terrain conditions.
Carry passengers only when permitted by the vehicle manufacturer and legislation.
Check tires, brakes, lights, steering and fluid levels before riding.
Stay on designated trails and obtain permission before riding on private property.
Avoid stunt driving and other risky behaviour.

The OPP also note that ORVs are not permitted on every highway or roadway. Municipal bylaws and provincial regulations determine where they can legally be operated, along with the licensing and equipment requirements that apply.

Depending on the circumstances, riders — and in some cases ORV owners — can face charges including operating without insurance, failing to wear a helmet, careless driving, impaired driving, operating an unregistered vehicle, mischief and trespassing.

The OPP encourage riders to complete an off-road vehicle safety course and review Ontario's ORV laws before heading out.
