The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) West Region has launched its annual “Stay Focused” campaign, targeting inattentive drivers across the region.
Running from March 27th to April 3rd, 2026, the campaign combines education and enforcement, with officers taking a zero-tolerance approach to distracted driving. Motorists can expect an increased police presence on roads and highways throughout the week.
Police say inattentive driving remains a leading cause of fatal collisions. In 2024, the OPP investigated 114 fatal crashes, resulting in 125 deaths, with 45 linked to distracted driving. So far in 2026, five deaths have already been attributed to inattentive driving.
Distracted driving includes anything that takes attention away from the road, such as using a phone, adjusting GPS, eating, or tending to passengers.
Staff Sergeant Julie McLeod says, “Drivers need to stay focused and make safe choices every time they get behind the wheel.”
Convictions can result in fines, demerit points, licence suspensions, and higher insurance costs.
