The recommendation follows a staff review that found differences in the timing of reduced speed limits and flashing beacons at various school zones. Staff reviewed the schedules in relation to school arrival times, nutrition and lunch breaks, and dismissal.
If approved, flashing beacons marking school zones would operate according to a standardized schedule when schools are in session.
The proposed schedule would have the beacons activated 45 minutes before and 15 minutes after morning arrival bell times, as well as 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after nutrition and lunch breaks.
For afternoon dismissal, the beacons would operate from 15 minutes before until 45 minutes after the dismissal bell.
Council is being asked to approve a by-law amendment establishing the standardized operating periods.
The matter is on the agenda for today's Oxford County Council meeting.
