Oxford County rethinks growth strategy, calls for provincial support on rising costs

Warden Marcus Ryan releases statement on new approach to understanding growth

Growth is coming to Oxford County — but who pays for it is becoming a central question for local leaders.

Warden Marcus Ryan says updated provincial forecasts show the region’s population could approach 250,000 over the next 40 years, placing increasing pressure on infrastructure and services.

“Growth pays for growth” is a common assumption, Ryan said, but not always reality, pointing to challenges such as crowded classrooms, limited access to primary care and housing shortages.

In response, county council has adopted a new approach aimed at better understanding and managing those pressures.

The first step involves a detailed staff report examining the true costs associated with growth. The county is also seeking discussions with the provincial government about additional financial support to help municipalities keep pace.

A third component focuses on setting higher targets to contain development within existing built-up areas, improving the use of current infrastructure while protecting farmland and green space.

Ryan says the shift represents a long-term strategy to ensure growth is financially sustainable and better aligned with community needs.

County officials say the approach will continue to evolve as discussions with the province move forward.
