Pride flag vandalized in Norwich

Oxford OPP are investigating after a Pride flag was allegedly taken from a flagpole and set on fire in Norwich Township late Monday night.

Police say the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Jerdon Street and involved two unidentified suspects believed to be in their late teens or early twenties. Investigators describe one suspect as having an average build and wearing dark pants along with a dark hooded sweatshirt. The second suspect is described as having an average build and wearing a dark T-shirt, light-coloured pants and a head covering.

The incident is the latest in a series of Pride flag-related vandalism cases reported in Norwich in recent years. In 2023, township council voted to limit flags flown on municipal property to civic flags only after multiple Pride flags were reported stolen or damaged. The municipality later reversed that decision in 2024 following a human rights complaint. Despite the policy change, incidents continued, including a case in 2025 in which a Pride flag was reportedly removed and burned at a local school.

Police continue to investigate the latest occurrence and are seeking information from the public.
