Southwestern Public Health is encouraging residents to roll up their sleeves as another respiratory virus season gets underway.
The health unit says vaccination remains one of the best ways to protect against influenza, COVID-19 and, for those eligible, RSV.
Respiratory illnesses can lead to serious complications, especially for older adults, young children, pregnant individuals and people with underlying health conditions. Influenza alone results in about 12,000 hospitalizations across Canada each year.
SWPH Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ninh Tran says residents should make a plan to get vaccinated, particularly with respiratory virus season arriving early this year.
Flu and COVID-19 vaccination clinics are being offered this fall at SWPH offices in Woodstock and St. Thomas, along with select community locations.
Starting October 19, appointments are available for people 65 and older, pregnant individuals, health-care workers, people living or working in congregate settings and other priority groups. Booking opens to the general public October 26.
Flu shots are also available through participating pharmacies and health-care providers, while COVID-19 vaccines are available at pharmacies.
SWPH has also brought back its Respiratory Virus Dashboard to track local flu, COVID-19 and RSV activity.
Residents are also encouraged to stay home when sick, wash their hands and cover coughs and sneezes.
