Health officials are warning you to limit time outdoors during wildfire smoke
Residents are being urged to take precautions as wildfire smoke continues to impact air quality, with officials warning that everyone’s health can be affected during periods of heavy smoke.
Health officials say smoke exposure can cause symptoms including irritation to the eyes, nose and throat, headaches and mild coughing. More serious symptoms, such as wheezing, chest pains or severe coughing, may also occur.
People are encouraged to limit time outdoors and reschedule or cancel outdoor sports, activities and events while smoke conditions persist.
Officials say those most vulnerable to wildfire smoke include seniors, pregnant people, infants, young children, people with existing health conditions and those who work outdoors. These groups are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activities and seek medical attention if symptoms develop.
Residents can help reduce exposure by keeping windows and doors closed as much as possible, using the highest quality air filters their ventilation systems can handle, and using certified portable air cleaners that filter fine particles.
For those who must spend time outside, a properly fitted N95 or equivalent respirator can help reduce exposure to wildfire smoke particles, although officials note there are still potential health risks.
Residents are also being reminded to check in on family members, friends and neighbours who may be more affected by smoke conditions and to continue following guidance from local authorities.
