The “No Lights, No Sirens” experience is designed to provide a calm, low-stimulation environment where guests can explore the fire hall and emergency equipment without the loud noises, flashing lights, or other sensory triggers commonly associated with emergency services.
A first of its kind event is being hosted this month by the Tillsonburg Fire Department. The inaugural Sensory Friendly Fire Hall Event created specifically for individuals with disabilities or developmental needs, along with their caregivers.
Sarah Barclay, Public Educator with the Tillsonburg Fire Department says the event is set for May 27th from 6-8pm at the fire hall at 80 Concession Street.
This special “No Lights, No Sirens” experience is designed to provide a calm, low-stimulation environment where guests can explore the fire hall and emergency equipment without the loud noises, flashing lights, or other sensory triggers commonly associated with emergency services.
Barclay says the reasons are simple as to why try an event like this for the first time.
Visitors will have the opportunity to take part in guided, hands-on tours of the fire station and view fire trucks, a police cruiser, an ambulance, and related equipment in a relaxed and supportive setting. All activities are designed to be safe, welcoming, and free of pressure.
Members of the Tillsonburg Fire Department, Oxford EMS, and the OPP will be on site to engage with attendees, answer questions, and demonstrate equipment in a controlled and approachable manner.
As this is a pilot initiative, pre-registration is required to help ensure attendance remains manageable and that the environment stays comfortable and accessible for all participants. The event is free and for all ages and not just children.
Residents who may have sensory needs or sensory sensitivities email fireprevention@tillsonburg.ca to register.
