OPP issues reminders about the rules of the road
With more people choosing e-bikes, mopeds, and scooters to get around, the Ontario Provincial Police is reminding riders to know the rules before hitting the road.
E-bikes can be used on most municipal roads where bicycles are allowed but are off-limits on sidewalks, bike paths, or trails where prohibited by local bylaws. Mopeds and scooters may be driven on public roads, except controlled-access highways like the 400-series, and must follow the same rules as other motor vehicles.
Riders must be at least 16 and wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet. While e-bike riders don’t need a driver’s licence, registration, or insurance, those on mopeds and scooters do — and their vehicles must be registered and insured.
E-bikes must have pedals, weigh no more than 120 kilograms, have a motor rated at 500 watts or less, and be able to stop within nine metres when travelling 30 km/h. Modifying the pedals or motor to exceed legal limits reclassifies the e-bike as a motor vehicle, requiring full licensing and insurance.
The OPP also warns that impaired operation is a criminal offence, and anyone with a driving prohibition may not legally operate any of these vehicles. Riders are encouraged to check municipal bylaws for additional restrictions before heading out.
