Blizzard conditions and dangerous snow squalls forecast as 20 to 40 cm of snow threatens travel

The forecast for Oxford County continues to pose challenges for area residents

Whiteout conditions are expected to develop across the region as dangerous snow squalls move in, bringing heavy snowfall and powerful winds that could make travel nearly impossible into Tuesday.

Environment officials warn of blizzard conditions with near-zero visibility and total snowfall amounts ranging from 20 to 40 centimetres. The worst conditions are expected to begin late this morning, easing to scattered flurries by Tuesday afternoon.

Forecasters say an initial burst of intense snow will arrive with a sharp cold front, quickly dumping up to five centimetres of snow and causing a rapid temperature drop that may lead to icy roads.

Lake-effect snow squalls off Lake Huron are also expected to intensify conditions, with northwesterly wind gusts between 70 and 90 kilometres an hour creating widespread blowing snow.

Motorists are urged to avoid travel if possible, as visibility may suddenly drop to near zero and road closures are possible.
