Southwestern Public Health issues cold weather alerts when Environment Canada forecasts an air temperature of -15˚C or lower or a wind chill of -20˚C or lower.
Southwestern Public Health (SWPH) has issued a cold weather alert for Elgin County, Oxford County, and the City of St. Thomas as dangerously cold temperatures settle into the region.
Environment Canada is forecasting overnight lows near –14°C, with wind chill values reaching –22°C. The cold conditions are expected to continue into Tuesday morning before temperatures begin to moderate later in the day.
SWPH urges residents to take precautions to prevent cold-related illnesses such as frostbite and hypothermia.
Health officials recommend limiting time outdoors, dressing in warm layers, covering exposed skin, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine while outside. Residents are also encouraged to prepare their homes and vehicles for winter conditions and to seek medical attention if symptoms of frostbite or hypothermia occur.
You are reminded that warming centres are available across the region, offering a safe, heated space for anyone needing temporary relief from the cold.
