Extreme cold warning issued for Southwestern Ontario

You're encouraged to dress warmly this weekend: Southwestern Public Health

Environment Canada is forecasting extreme cold for the Southwestern Public Health region.

The cold conditions are expected to persist through Sunday, prompting a cold weather alert from Southwestern Public Health. Residents are being urged to take precautions to prevent cold-related injuries such as frostbite and hypothermia.

Health officials say older adults, infants, outdoor workers, people participating in winter sports and individuals experiencing homelessness are most vulnerable during extreme cold.

Hypothermia occurs when body temperature falls below 35 C and can cause shivering, confusion, slurred speech and drowsiness. Frostbite may result in numbness and pale or waxy skin, particularly on extremities.

Residents are advised to stay indoors when possible, dress in warm layers, cover exposed skin and avoid alcohol or caffeine. Anyone showing signs of hypothermia should receive immediate medical attention.
