Police say victims receive phone calls that may appear to come from the real office number.
The Woodstock Police Service is warning residents about a fraud scam involving callers pretending to represent the Woodstock Crown Attorney’s Office.
Police say victims receive phone calls that may appear to come from the real office number. Scammers may use the names of actual Crown Attorneys or claim to work with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. They often say the person is a victim of identity theft and must urgently verify information or protect funds.
Callers may direct victims to use Bitcoin machines, deposit cash in drop boxes, or scan QR codes. Police stress that government offices will never request payment this way.
Residents are urged to avoid sharing personal information and verify calls independently. Anyone affected should contact Woodstock Police or their bank immediately.
