London police have put out more details about a weekend investigation that resulted in several arrests
Four people are facing charges after a trespassing investigation at Western University led to the seizure of a loaded firearm and the discovery of hazardous chemicals inside a nearby residence.
London police say they were called shortly before 1:40 a.m. Saturday, to assist Western University Special Constables with a trespasser in custody following a foot pursuit on campus. Officers located a loaded handgun at the scene of the arrest.
Investigators later determined a second male was involved. That investigation led police to a home near Chesham Avenue and Chesham Place, where hazardous chemicals capable of being used to create explosives were discovered. Two additional people connected to the residence were arrested.
The Explosives Disposal Unit attended to assess and secure the scene. The residence has remained under police guard while the Major Crime Section continues the investigation.
A 27-year-old Ottawa man is facing multiple firearm- and break-and-enter-related charges. A 26-year-old London man is charged with break and enter with intent and occupying a motor vehicle with a firearm. Two other London residents, aged 25 and 21, are each charged with unlawful possession of explosives.
All four accused remain in custody. Police say specialized personnel will remain on scene for an undetermined period while the chemicals are safely removed.
