London nonprofits hiring but struggling to keep staff, new report warns

The report highlights the sector’s strong commitment to inclusive hiring.

Nonprofits across the London Economic Region are actively hiring, but many face growing challenges with staff retention and wage equity, according to a new report released August 11 by the Elgin Middlesex Oxford Workforce Planning and Development Board (EMOWPDB) and Pillar Nonprofit Network.

The report highlights the sector’s strong commitment to inclusive hiring, with many organizations employing women, young people, immigrants, and racialized individuals in 2024. However, retention is a major concern, as nonprofits continue to lose both younger workers and older adults at high rates.

Low wages remain a significant barrier. While 56% of nonprofits paid a living wage last year, nearly one-third of employers cited low pay as a reason for staff leaving, despite efforts such as flexible schedules, training, and wellness programs.

Looking ahead, nonprofits anticipate increasing pressure in 2025, with inflation, staffing shortages, and limited resources threatening their ability to train and retain skilled employees.
