Norfolk General Hospital begins multi-million-dollar surgical modernization project

Big improvements are coming to Norfolk General Hospital

Norfolk General Hospital is moving forward with a multi-million-dollar project to modernize surgical care by rebuilding two operating rooms into advanced Minimally Invasive Surgical suites.

The upgrades aim to improve patient safety, reduce wait times, and expand access to modern surgical services for residents across Norfolk County. The project is expected to be completed by spring 2026 and will bring the hospital’s surgical spaces up to current safety and infection-control standards.

Originally built in 1964, NGH’s surgical suites have long exceeded their intended lifespan. Once complete, the hospital will operate four fully functional operating rooms instead of three, increasing flexibility and capacity while supporting the growth of new surgical services close to home.

The new MIS suites will feature advanced 4K laparoscopic technology, offering surgeons clearer visualization and greater precision during procedures. Minimally invasive surgery typically results in less pain, fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times, with some procedures shifting from inpatient to day surgery.

Funding for the project comes from hospital investment, community support, and previously approved Norfolk County funding. Norfolk County Council has allocated $3 million toward the project as part of a broader $5 million capital commitment made in 2016, while the NGH Foundation is contributing $1 million through its Building a Better Hospital Campaign.

Construction will take place in phases to ensure surgeries continue without interruption, with enhanced infection control measures in place throughout the process.
