2025 was a busy and impactful year for the Norfolk County OPP.
From targeted traffic initiatives to complex criminal investigations and growing community engagement, Inspector Andy Tait says the year showcased both the challenges and successes of policing in a rural, diverse county.
Motor Vehicle Collisions and Road Safety
Road safety was a major focus in 2025.
The detachment saw a slight decrease in motor vehicle collisions compared to previous years.
Tait credits targeted enforcement initiatives and community awareness campaigns for part of this improvement.
Crime Trends and Complex Investigations
Property crime remained fairly consistent in 2025, while violent crime showed a slight decrease.
Opioid overdoses also decreased, thanks in part to collaboration with public health and community partners.
Two high-profile cases in particular highlighted the detachment’s investigative capabilities:
Serial arson investigation: Early in the year, officers tackled a complex and stressful series of fires, requiring intensive coordination and resources.
Cemetery thefts: Later in 2025, the detachment investigated a rash of thefts of bronze and other items from local cemeteries.
In addition, the community street crime unit and the auto theft unit contributed significantly in 2025, seizing hundreds of thousands of dollars in illicit drugs and recovering thousands of dollars in stolen property, including vehicles, trailers, and tools.
Community Engagement and Positive Impact
Tait emphasizes that Norfolk County OPP sees itself as part of the community.
Officers increased patrol hours, expanded outreach, and worked closely with local organizations.
Highlights include:
Bicycles for community policing: The detachment acquired two new bicycles to allow officers to engage with residents in parks, business districts, and schools.
International farm worker engagement: Officers participated in community events, including an international soccer tournament, strengthening relationships with Norfolk’s diverse agricultural community.
Youth initiatives: Programs like DARE continue to build positive relationships with students.
Tait also shared a touching example of day-to-day community impact.
Technology and Policing
Norfolk County OPP continues to embrace technology to enhance safety and accountability.
All officers are now equipped with body-worn cameras, providing both transparency and protection for members during investigations and community interactions.

For 2026, Tait hopes to see continued improvements in road safety, particularly through public awareness and personal responsibility behind the wheel.
He also envisions continued collaboration across agencies, including fire services, municipal partners, and community organizations, to ensure Norfolk County remains a safe and connected community.
