Ontario invests more than $47M in research projects to drive innovation, protect jobs

The province is spending millions of dollars on research projects and universities, colleges and hospitals

The Ontario government says it will invest more than $47M in 195 research projects at universities, colleges and hospitals across the province, aimed at driving innovation and strengthening the economy.

The funding is being delivered through the Ontario Research Fund and will support projects in key sectors including agri food, manufacturing, critical minerals, life sciences and information technology. The province says the investment will help translate research into real world applications that protect good paying jobs and keep Ontario competitive in global markets.

The announcement was made at Georgian College in Barrie, which is receiving nearly $1M to upgrade its Centre of Industrial Simulation and Prototyping. The centre supports advanced manufacturing research and works closely with regional businesses to develop new technologies and train skilled workers. The province says the upgrade is expected to help create up to 460 jobs while preparing students for careers in advanced manufacturing.

The funding can be used to build or renovate research facilities and acquire state of the art equipment, allowing institutions to expand applied research and industry partnerships.

Ontario says supporting homegrown research is key to economic resilience, particularly during periods of global uncertainty. Since taking office, the provincal government says they've invested more than $2B in the research sector, supporting over 1,800 projects and creating thousands of training opportunities for researchers and students.

Provincial officials say investments like this help attract talent, encourage innovation and ensure Ontario remains one of the most competitive places to invest, grow and do business in the G7.
