Population shifts and limited infrastructure are prompting Oxford County to explore new strategies for emergency response, with proposals heading to council this fall.
Population growth, an aging population and a healthcare system that's largely focused on urban areas, are placing stress on Oxford County's ability to deliver emergency medical services.
Chief of Paramedic Service Ryan Hall tell us efforts are being made to address the issue of attending calls in outlying areas by adding local infrastructure.
Outside of building satellite EMS centres in specific areas - Hall says they're working with other first responders in the region to see about temporarily stationing equipment closer to where it's needed.
Hall says renting or leasing a facility to house an ambulance isn't as easy as it might sound.
Hall says another option is collaborating with neighbouring upper tier municipalities.
As for next steps, Hall says options are being prepared for County Council to consider as part of the 2026 budget process. The prosposals will look at short and long-term planning strategies.
It's expected EMS will know the direction the County wants to take in December with the budget being finalized early in the new year.
