Police urge caution as warming weather creates unpredictable ice conditions

“No ice is safe ice” as winter conditions shift.

As temperatures fluctuate across Southwestern Ontario, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are issuing a clear warning that no ice should be considered safe.

West Region Sergeant Ed Sanchuk says that even when lakes, ponds, and other bodies of water appear solid - that may not be the case.

Sanchuk urges anyone venturing onto ice — whether skating, fishing, or walking — to prioritize safety above all else.

Beyond ice safety, Sanchuk reminds residents to stay visible while outdoors in winter to ensure safety on roads and near frozen bodies of water.

Sanchuk encourages everyone to keep an eye on weather conditions and lean on the side of caution whenever ice is involved.
