Strathroy author earns national recognition for award-nominated books

Casey Lyall's novel Waking the Dead and Other Fun Activities and graphic novel The League of Littles have been nominated for major Canadian literary awards.

Strathroy author Casey Lyall is receiving national attention after two of her books were nominated for major Canadian literary awards.

Lyall says the news was amazing.

Her novel Waking the Dead and Other Fun Activities was one of the five nominated for the Arlene Barlin Science Fiction and Fantasy Award, part of the Canadian Children’s Book Centre (CCBC) Book Awards. The story follows Kimmy, a girl whose family runs a funeral home. She inherits a special power from her father that allows them to temporarily bring people back to life to help them fulfill their final wishes. The book also features a unique mystery where the murder victim is alive to help solve their own case.

Her second book, a graphic novel called The League of Littles, was nominated through the Forest of Reading program. The program involves schools across Canada and allows children to vote for their favourite books.

The League of Littles, illustrated by Sarah Faber, tells the story of a group that helps younger siblings solve problems. In the book, the team helps a young girl find her sister’s missing hamster before she gets in trouble. A sequel, The Band of Biggs, focused on older siblings, is expected to be released next year.

She mentioned both nominations came as a huge surprise.

When asked about inspiration, Lyall said her ideas often come unexpectedly.

Lyall hopes her books make readers feel connected to the characters while also entertaining them.

For young writers, her advice is simple.

Her books are available anywhere books are sold, but Bookmarks the Spot, in Mt Brydges, always has signed copies on hand.
