Tillsonburg Town Council is taking steps toward establishing a formal framework for corporate sponsorship, advertising, partnerships and naming rights involving Town facilities and initiatives.
Council endorsed a proposed framework during Monday night's meeting and directed Town staff to return with draft policies and an implementation plan.
The move could eventually create more opportunities for local businesses and organizations to financially support municipal programs, facilities and community initiatives while receiving recognition for their contributions.
The Town already offers a number of sponsorship and advertising opportunities, particularly through its recreation facilities. Current opportunities include sponsoring free skating, swimming and special recreation events, as well as advertising at the Tillsonburg Community Centre arena and Lake Lisgar Waterpark.
For example, businesses can currently sponsor a free skate or swim session for $217.50, while a full day of sponsorship at Lake Lisgar Waterpark is available for $1,331. Arena advertising is also available through memorial and community boards.
The new framework would go beyond those existing opportunities by establishing policies for larger sponsorship and partnership arrangements, including potential naming rights.
However, Council has not approved any specific naming-rights agreement or authorized the naming of a municipal facility after a company.
Instead, staff will now be responsible for developing the policies that would determine how sponsorship, advertising, partnerships and naming opportunities could be handled in the future.
Those policies could establish consistent expectations around eligibility, recognition, agreements and the types of sponsorship or naming arrangements the Town would consider.
The initiative comes as municipalities increasingly look to partnerships and sponsorships as another way to support community services and facilities while providing businesses with opportunities to connect with local residents.
Tillsonburg already promotes its sponsorship and advertising program as a way for businesses to support local recreation and gain exposure through community events and facilities.
Council's decision Monday represents an initial step toward creating a more comprehensive approach.
The draft policies and implementation plan will have to return to Council for consideration before any new corporate sponsorship or naming-rights arrangements can be established under the proposed framework.
The Town maintains its Council agendas and minutes online, allowing residents to follow the development of the policies as they return to Council.
