Tragedy in Port Stanley after man drowns at Main Beach

Despite rescue attempts, a man was pulled from the water without vital signs and later pronounced dead.

Emergency crews were called to Port Stanley Main Beach over the weekend after reports of a swimmer in distress. Despite rescue attempts, a man was pulled from the water without vital signs and later pronounced dead.

The Elgin County OPP, along with paramedics and fire services, responded quickly to the scene, but officials say the strong undertow and waves made conditions especially dangerous. An investigation is underway, and the man’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.

Drownings are an unfortunate reminder of the risks associated with Lake Erie’s unpredictable waters. Authorities are urging beachgoers to swim only in designated areas, obey lifeguard directions, and take extra precautions when swimming in rough or unfamiliar conditions.

Port Stanley, one of the region’s most popular summer destinations, attracts thousands of visitors each year. Safety officials emphasize that while the beach is a recreational draw, changing currents and weather patterns can turn hazardous in minutes.
