“We’re really in a holding pattern”: Trent history professor says any fallout from Venezuela takeover remains a great unknown

Venezuelan oil is something that Canada should be paying close attention to.

Uncertainty is the only thing certain in the wake of the stunning weekend events that saw Venezuela’s president brought to New York City to face charges related to drug trafficking and weapons.

Trent University history professor Dr. David Sheinin says while court proceedings against Nicolas Maduro will follow their course, what will happen on the ground in the South American country is a big question mark. That said, he doesn’t think further military action is on the cards.

Dr. Sheinin says while many remain surprised that other leading government officials weren’t removed as well, an orderly transition is incumbent upon some level of continuity in the short term.

Speaking to Venezuela’s huge oil reserves, which China and Russia draw upon, Dr. Sheinin says American’s ready access to Venezuelan oil is something that Canada should be paying close attention to.
