Working smoke alarm helps family escape Simcoe house fire

Investigators believe the fire was electrical in nature.

Four people escaped safely after an early-morning house fire in Simcoe, thanks to a working smoke alarm.

Just after 2:00 a.m. yesterday (Jan 21), two stations from the Norfolk County Fire Department were called to a structure fire on Talbot Street South in Simcoe.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the home. Crews quickly brought the fire under control and were able to contain most of the damage to the rear portion of the structure. All four occupants made it out safely after being alerted by the smoke alarm.

Damage to the building and its contents is estimated at $150,000. The property is insured.

Investigators believe the fire was electrical in nature.

The fire department is reminding residents to use only CSA-approved power bars and to never overload electrical outlets. Officials also stress the importance of working smoke alarms, recommending one on every level of the home and outside all sleeping areas.
