Fuel Up: Gas prices in Tillsonburg

February 5 is World Nutella Day, a celebration born in 2007 when blogger Sara Rosso rallied fellow fans to share their devotion to the hazelnut‑cocoa spread that has become a worldwide favourite. Each year, Ferrero selects one Nutella lover to lead the festivities, and social feeds fill with photos, recipes, and declarations of loyalty to the iconic jar.

Nutella’s story stretches back to post‑war Italy. In 1946, pastry maker Pietro Ferrero created Pasta Gianduja, a hazelnut‑based chocolate substitute born from cocoa shortages. It began as a solid block, then evolved into a creamy spread called Supercrema gianduja in 1951. In 1963, Pietro’s son Michele Ferrero refined the recipe, rebranded it as Nutella, and launched it across Europe. The first jar left the Alba factory on April 20, 1964 — and it was an instant hit.

Nutella rode the wave of Italy’s economic boom, becoming a staple for children, adults, and even political leftists who embraced it as Italy’s answer to American peanut butter. It arrived in the U.S. in 1983 and has since become a global phenomenon, inspiring everything from commemorative stamps to international debates about palm oil and recipe changes.

Each jar contains roughly 50 hazelnuts, along with sugar, palm oil, cocoa, skim milk, and a handful of stabilizers that keep the texture smooth and spreadable. Ferrero now uses about a quarter of the world’s hazelnut supply — a testament to just how beloved Nutella has become.
