February 11 is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a moment to recognize the achievements of women who have shaped scientific progress — and to support the next generation of girls entering STEM fields. These careers are among the fastest‑growing in the world, yet women remain underrepresented at nearly every level. Today is about changing that trajectory.
The United Nations has long emphasized that gender equality in science isn’t just a fairness issue — it’s essential for global development. When women and girls have equal access to education, research opportunities, and innovation, economies grow, communities strengthen, and the world benefits from a wider range of ideas and discoveries.
In 2013, the UN General Assembly formally recognized the importance of equal participation in science, technology, and innovation. Two years later, in 2015, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science was officially established to promote access, visibility, and empowerment. Since then, the global community has made strides in encouraging girls to pursue STEM — through mentorship, scholarships, outreach programs, and representation — but the work continues.
Today is a reminder to celebrate the trailblazers, uplift the students just beginning their journey, and help build a future where talent, curiosity, and opportunity are never limited by gender.
