More than 75 students from Oxford and surrounding counties are expected to compete.
The 18th annual Oxford Invitational Youth Robotics Challenge returns to Woodstock today (November 27) bringing together teams from seven local high schools for an afternoon of innovation and friendly competition.
The event runs from 2 to 5:30 p.m. inside the Goff Gymnasium at the Reeves Community Complex. This year’s challenge focuses on building an autonomous farm robot, reflecting the growing use of robotics in Southwestern Ontario agriculture. Teams must design robots that can “fertilize” different “crops” on a model farm field and safely navigate obstacles. When sensors detect an obstacle, robots must stop, flash lights or play sounds, and continue only when the path is clear.
Each team receives the same Lego Spike Prime Kit and no extra materials, creating what organizers call an “Apollo 13 scenario” where students must solve problems using identical components. Along with building their robots, teams must submit a written report and video explaining their design process and challenges.
Brad Hammond, Economic Development Officer for the City of Woodstock and competition co-chair, says the event gives students hands-on experience with real-world technology and introduces them to engineering, skilled trades and tech-based career paths.
More than 75 students from Oxford County, London-Middlesex, St. Thomas-Elgin and Norfolk County are expected to compete. Judging takes place from 3 to 5 p.m., with student presentations scheduled from 5 to 5:30 p.m.
