The exhibit explores the symbolism of the turtle and the idea of carrying “home” wherever you go.
Station Arts Centre is inviting artists of all ages and skill levels to take part in a new community exhibit titled "Shell of a Place", opening in celebration of Turtlefest.
The exhibit explores the symbolism of the turtle and the idea of carrying “home” wherever you go. Executive Director Tabitha Verbuyst says the show is designed to be welcoming and community-focused.
Visitors will be able to vote for their favourite piece, with the top-voted artwork receiving a $250 award.
Submissions are open now, with a deadline of May 23, 2026. Artists can submit up to two works in any medium, from painting and sculpture to fibre and experimental art.
The theme encourages artists to reflect on how home has shaped them — whether through landscape, personal history, migration, nostalgia or change. Verbuyst hopes to see a wide variety of what people think of when they think of home.
She went on to say that Turtlefest will be the perfect launch of the exhibit.
The exhibit will also feature an interactive element. Visitors will be invited to write what “home” means to them on sticky notes, which will fill a large turtle shell display in the gallery.
The exhibit's officially opening is June 19 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Full submission details are available at stationarts.ca under the exhibits section.
