A respected Woodstock physician is being celebrated for decades of dedication to Oxford County’s most vulnerable patients.
Dr. Gary Fullerton has received the Outstanding Contribution Award from the Oxford County Medical Society (OCMS) — the first honour of its kind — recognizing his exceptional service and commitment to residents who often lack access to family doctors.
The OCMS, a branch of the Ontario Medical Association, represents local physicians and promotes collaboration between specialists and family practitioners to improve patient care. Society president Dr. Shabbir Amanullah says the award was created after they received patient feedback.
OCMS identified doctors who continued to provide essential care, prescriptions, and monitoring for patients without primary care providers. Dr. Fullerton stood out as an overwhelming favourite.
Dr. Fullerton says he was both surprised and honoured to receive the award.
He added that when patients tell you that you’ve made a difference in their lives, that’s the highest recognition you can get.
Dr. Fullerton thinks people are appreciative due to a shortage of family physicians.
As a general internal medicine specialist at Woodstock Hospital, Fullerton has spent more than 40 years managing chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart failure, and high blood pressure.
As Oxford County continues to grow, the community hopes more dedicated doctors like Dr. Fullerton will choose to make Oxford their home.
